William Warren Breece, Jr.
The PA Vietnam Veterans Fund and the County of Bucks are dedicating a bridge on Wednesday, August 23rd, at 11:00am. Bucks County Bridge No. 313, spanning the Delaware Canal at Letchworth Avenue, Yardley, Bucks County, PA will be named in honor of United States Army Warrant Officer William Warren Breece, Jr. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Breece was born on May 3rd, 1948 to William and Ruth Breece. He was involved in scouting and was a 1966 graduate of Pennsbury High School. Breece studies at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and attended William Penn College in Oskalossa, Iowa.
On December 5th, 1968, Breece was flying over Rach Gia on a mission in support of ground forces. He had served just six weeks in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot with Troop A, 7th Squadron, 1st Air Calvary, 164th Aviation Group. Breece was severely wounded in the arm and shoulder by automatic weapons fire. He returned fire, but the enemy was still shooting at the ground troops. Despite bleeding profusely and fully realizing the danger involved, he initiated another attack. Breece was struck by an enemy round, which mortally wounded him. Breece’s quick thinking, aggressive action, and extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior hostile force saved many friendly lives.
He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his actions. He is buried in Newtown Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
